Biographies index Emil Grosswald was born into a Jewish family in Bucharest. The rise of anti-Semitism in Romania and the horror of the Nazi policies in Germany towards the Jews made Grosswald decide to France to further his education. He studied in studies in Paris and Montpelier, being in Paris in June when the city fell to the advancing German armies. He fled on foot to Orleans, then on to Spain as he sought safety. From Spain Grosswald found a boat which took him to Cuba. He spent the remaining years of World War II in Havana, then in he went to Puerto Rico, eventually moving to the United States where he was able to register for doctoral studies at the University of Pennsylvania under the supervision of Hans Rademacher.

Grosswald was born on December 15, in Bucharest , Romania. When war broke out, he fled from Paris in June, to the University of Montpellier , where he began doctoral studies in mathematics. He fled at the end of , through Spain and Lisbon to Cuba. He moved to Puerto Rico in and then to the United States in He received his Ph. He met his wife Elisabeth Lissy Rosenthal in Cuba, probably in or They were married in in Saskatoon , Canada , where he had his first teaching position after receiving his Ph.

During their first stay, they met Albert Einstein , with whom Emil had a correspondence, later bequeathed to the University of Texas, and formed many friendships, among others with the physicist Freeman Dyson. Emil and Lissy had two daughters, Blanche, who became a professor of Social Work at Rutgers University but died in at the age of 50, and Vivian , a professor of law at the University of Pittsburgh.

Vivian was decorated in by the Republic of Austria for her work as the United States appointee to the Austrian General Settlement Fund Committee for Nazi-era property compensation, and in by the government of France for her services in promotion of the French language and culture in the United States.
