A lovely question from the perspective of a lover of modern Tamil literature. During my student days, I was almost a fanatical follower of Jayakanthan, so much so I even used to sport the trade mark flowing mane, mustache, shell framed spectacles etc just like the iconic writer.
Image from Internet. In retrospect, I feel Jayakanthan was a far better short story writer and non-fiction essayist than a novelist. The shorter version helped him capture the intensity and even incandescence of his explosive subject matters, which could not be sustained in the longer novels.
That said, I would like to suggest three later novels of JK, which in my opinion reflect the organic evolution of his skills both as a thinker and a writer. Jayakanthan was conferred with the prestigious Sahitya Akademi award for this work. This novel was later made into a movie of the same name, which won for Actor Lakshmi the National Award for Best Actor Female for her excellent portrayal of the role of Ganga, the protagonist.
This novel also was made into a movie later. The character of Henri with traces of resemblance to Christ like figure, and every character, even the minor ones, are etched with great empathy and invested with their own individuality. A must read for any lover of good literature. After scaling the pinnacle of writing with this novel, Jayakanthan in my opinion lost his Midas touch, and his later novels look somewhat labored or jaded, and perhaps the Author himself had sensed this and almost stopped writing by the mid s.
